  • The Dirt Company, Cleaner Clothes for a Cleaner Earth

    the unwash review

Written by Contributing Editor, Liz Grogan

The Dirt Company is on a mission to clean up the planet while cleaning your clothes. This small Australian team began working in 2013 to create a zero-waste laundry system using recycled and refillable products. With their Refill, Return System, customers replace bulky plastic jugs with sleek, durable glass dispenser bottles. The bottles come pre-filled with their top-rated, highly concentrated, plant-based laundry detergent. Their biodegradable concentrates deliver more loads per bottle and contain better-quality natural ingredients, such as high-performing enzymes.

When your bottles are empty, the Dirt Company sends you refill packs to restock your bottles. The empty packs are recollected, sanitized and reused. With thousands of customers already participating, the amount of waste prevented is remarkable. Customers have reused 40,218 refill packs, replaced 528,870 laundry jugs, and eliminated 80 tonnes of plastic.

“Heaps of excess packaging. Very well disguised cost per load. Very well hidden ingredients. This list went on. It was like the concept of sustainability had not yet hit the laundry aisle. I could do better I just knew it.” – Frankie Layton, The Dirt Company Founder

Frankie Layton, Founder of the Dirt Company, realized she wanted to start a sustainably-focused business when she was 18 and working as a stewardess on a boat. She witnessed a deckhand throwing bags of trash overboard into the ocean, and the experience got her thinking very hard about where our trash ends up. One day, while in the laundry aisle of her local supermarket, she found further inspiration to start her business.

Her team focuses on taking a less, but better, approach to product design by keeping plastic and packaging to a minimum. The refill packs use up to 90% less plastic per wash than the average laundry detergent bottle. When well-traveled refill packs lose their durability, they are melted and remolded into 100% recycled scoops for their machine wash. By remolding the refill packs, The Dirt Company comes very close to eliminating plastic waste completely.
Their team is proof that progress isn’t always linear. Since the company started, they replaced their original aluminum bottles with glass and experimented with different recycled materials for their refill packs. They are committed to sharing every step forward, and backward, with their customers as they continue to learn and experiment in the sustainability space. Beyond their efforts to avoid new plastic, they also allocate 50% of profits towards projects that focus on removing plastic waste from the planet. You can find every decision they make about their packaging and product on their blog – along with tips to tackle stains like a pro!

    Press Reset with Krave Beauty

    the unwash review

Rewind to a couple of years ago, the skincare lovers of TikTok were singing praises for Krave Beauty’s Beet the Sun sunscreen and their beloved Great Barrier Relief serum. In April of 2021, Beet the Sun was discontinued due to inaccuracies when testing the amount of SPF offered in the product. Shortly after, the brand decided to do a company-wide reset to realign itself with its mission – particularly sustainability and social advocacy. Krave Beauty wanted to offer their customers solutions rather than skincare trends. The reset allowed the brand to slow down and hone in on a ‘less is more’ approach regarding its products and their sustainability impact. The fan-favorite brand is now back in action and has been offering realistic solutions to combat the lack of sustainable options in the industry.

Recently Krave Beauty launched a program to sell their products with imperfections, whether defunct packaging or misfired formulations, at a discounted price. Choosing to sell these products rather than throwing thousands of units of product away is a small way the brand is committing to its sustainability goals that many larger brands don’t do. Titled the ‘Waste Me Not Campaign,’ Krave Beauty is transparent about waste reduction while incentivizing sustainable practices with price-reduced products. With the brand’s new initiatives in place post their rest, consumers can feel even more empowered and confident in their purchases.

“We wanted to peel back the curtain of the industry to customers and say, packaging is definitely a wasteful thing, but there’s so much more to the conversation.” – Liah Yoo, Krave Beauty Founder

Founded by Liah Yoo, this adored skincare brand offers a handful of products designed to target various skincare needs. Focusing on providing fewer products that will work for more people allows the brand to cut down on waste and decrease confusion for consumers when choosing items. Their products make creating a skincare routine simple with needing no more than six products and even have your body care needs covered, hence their mission of ‘slowing down skincare.’

Krave Beauty proved that it’s okay to put your brand on pause to ensure you’re providing the best experience possible for people and the planet. The brand’s return was highly anticipated and worth the reset. Krave Beauty is committed to the long-term investment in making its brand as friendly towards the Earth as possible, all while cultivating an uplifting community of inclusivity. The brand commits 50% of its partnerships to creators of color, those in the LGBTQ+ community, and those disabled to reflect their consumer base in their campaigns. Krave Beauty’s vision for the skincare industry is reflected inside and out – they are a brand that practices what they preach and are working towards an industry that is sustainable and inclusive for all.

    the unwash review

Keeping vitamins, hair products, skincare, and everything else taking up space on a vanity organized can be a fraught task. Most of us have cluttered drawers filled with empty containers we forget to throw away, lost products, and the items we need mixed in between. Hoping to aid people in ditching plastic travel bottles and plastic bags to keep things organized, Cadence offers magnetic refillable capsules. Whether used to keep your cabinets tidy or for travel, these capsules can store all your essentials in a carry-on-friendly size. The magnetic design ensures none of your products will go missing. “Cadence was created because I was tired of buying things that didn’t feel “worth it,” and didn’t align with my values.” – Steph Hon, Cadence Founder

The brand continues to test different materials for use to be as conscious of its sustainability as possible. Ries puts value on the circularity of their product and hopes choices like using up-cycled materials will become more of a norm in the beauty industry.

Cabinet Health is Bringing Sustainability to Your Medicine Cabinet

    the unwash review

Cabinet Health is working to rid our medicine cabinets of single-use plastics with refillable medicine containers. The brand has an array of OTC medication options, including allergy relief, cold and flu, digestive health, and pain relievers. Plastic-free options for medicine are close to none, and Cabinet wanted to change.

“Our vision is to eliminate single-use plastic from the medicine industry entirely — one medicine cabinet at a time. People shouldn’t ever choose between the health of their family, and the health of the environment.” – Russell Gong, Cabinet Health Co-Founder

The refillable bottles and medication refills stay in an affordable price range helping medication be accessible and allowing for a greater reach of plastic-free products, which usually come with a high markup. Recycling plastic bottles has proven inconsistent and has significant variances based on location. Plastic recycling is unreliable, which makes the need for glass, aluminum, or refillable containers a needed sustainable option. The refillable medication pouches are FDA-approved and made from wood pulp in partnership with Pela Earth. Cabinet’s refill pouches are both spill and leak-proof and made to withstand the elements. These can be thrown into a personal composter or composted with your city if it is offered where you live. All refillable containers, including medication, are under $15, made of glass, have a childproof cap, and are stackable and shatterproof. Refills are $12 or under and come in 30-day quantities.

Cabinet can reduce plastic waste while keeping your OTC medication items clearly labeled and organized with the help of the brand’s refillable containers. The brand hopes to expand into partnerships with pharmacies to provide different packaging options, including prescription medications. The B-Corp-certified brand is increasing consumers’ choices when it comes to choosing sustainable and refillable products. This is a tremendous innovation for the healthcare industry and is a step towards keeping plastic bottles out of landfills, oceans, and our community’s waterways. Cabinet Health is working towards keeping you and the Earth healthy.

The Most Innovative Products of 2022

    the unwash • innovation

Often, the products you don’t even realize need innovation leave us with the best results. Many brands have launched new products to support a more sustainable future. Single-use plastics are becoming a thing of the past while companies find new and improved alternatives that do better for the environment. Many products are also becoming more user-friendly with more accessible designs and reachable price points. These brands have been blazing a trail to find sustainable solutions to everyday problems. We’re honoring some of our favorite and most innovative products of 2022 that are also simple product swaps to try out.

Conserving Beauty InstaMelt Makeup Wipes & Sheet Masks

This year, Australian Brand Conserving Beauty launched the first-ever dissolving makeup wipes, InstaMelt. Traditional makeup wipes end up in landfills as they are composed of 90% plastic and create unnecessary waste. InstaMelt makes taking off your makeup a breeze with its oil-based wipe formula that easily dissolves in water. Following the success of this product, the brand launched a dissolving sheet mask. Similar to makeup wipes, sheet masks are single-use products that do not decompose quickly. These sheet masks help you lock in moisture leaving your skin feeling refreshed. The brand and its founder Natassia Nicolao are committed to reducing as much waste as possible in the beauty industry with their water-free products. Now you can use your makeup wipes and sheet masks guilt-free as they dissolve easily down the drain leaving no microplastics behind. Conserving Beauty recently partnered with Cult Beauty to provide worldwide shipping for their products.

    Plus Body Wash

Julie Schott is no stranger to creating innovative products, and Plus is no different. Plus is revolutionizing personal care products with its line of dissolvable body wash sheets. Most personal care products, such as body wash, cleansers, and shampoo, are mainly water and packaged in large plastic bottles that typically cannot be recycled. Plus are changing this with their body wash sheets that dissolve into a wash when added to water. Even the packaging dissolves right down the drain. The brand offers a reliable dispenser to keep in your shower and single-use travel packs that are great for on-the-go use. Plus is innovating personal care products and changing the way we think about zero waste products that typically come in bar form.

    Biom Refillable Wipes

In response to the increased use of cleaning products amid the Coronavirus pandemic, Biom launched refillable and compostable wipes to help keep clean more manageable. The brand offers all-purpose cleaning wipes and alcohol sanitizing wipes that are skin safe. Their wipes are plant-based and completely biodegradable. The sleek refillable design looks great sitting on your kitchen counter, so much so that you wouldn’t even guess they’re wipes. The refillable dispenser comes in four colors, with the occasional limited edition color releases. The brand offers a subscription service at a discounted price and one-time purchases, depending on your needs. Biom created these wipes with people and the planet in mind by making everyday tasks easier while not contributing to additional waste.

    Ohhcean Vibrators

Ohhcean, a new sex toy line backed by Sinful, the largest adult intimate retailer in Scandinavia, launched the world’s first vibrators manufactured from outbound recycled ocean plastic. The brand wanted to find a solution for plastic waste and expand the ways we can upcycle ocean plastic. Ohhcean offers three vibrators in different shades of blue to represent the ocean from which the materials came. The collection launched in Europe, with further international expansion planned for the near future. Occhean marks a moment of being environmentally mindful in all areas, including sexual wellness, which may have been an afterthought prior. This collection aims to reduce the environmental impact of intimate products. These are products made to not only create fun and intimacy but inspire the possibilities of change.

Everist Shampoo, Conditioner & Body Wash Concentrates

Instead of creating a shampoo and condition bar, Everist found another way to ditch water in our personal care products without losing the traditional lather feeling. Everist offers shampoo, conditioner, and body wash concentrates packaged in a recyclable aluminum tube. These highly concentrated products lather like conventional shampoo or body wash when wet. A little goes a long way, and Everist wants you to get all the products, so each concentrate comes with an aluminum turnkey to ensure you get the most out of your purchase. The brand uses ingredients that naturally break down over time and do not pollute water systems. Everist gives you a traditional shampoo and conditioner feel without additional waste. These concentrates are revolutionizing a notably wasteful industry and are a force for positive

    Haeckels

Skincare is only one part of the Haeckles ethos. The brand has a wide range of candles, fragrances, and hair care products. Initially launched in 2012 as a men’s skincare line, the brand diversified and found a large following outside its male products. The UK-based fan-favorite brand plans a more extensive international expansion due to high demand and interest in its products. With products for everyone and every need, Haeckles holds true to its values and continues to adapt to the needs of its consumers as they grow. The brand is steadfast in its position as a sustainable staple.

Julie is Changing the Way We Think About the Morning-After Pill

    the unwash • innovation

The future of access to contraceptives, including condoms, both hormonal and non-hormonal birth control, and IUDs in the United States has a weight of uncertainty. With the overturn of Roe v. Wade and more states making it clear that contraceptives are on the chopping block leaves those that do not want or are not ready to have a child in a difficult position. Currently, no legislation actively blocks the sale of contraceptives, but that doesn’t mean it’s always an easy journey to access. Julie is a new healthcare brand from the same founder of Plus Personal Care, Julie Schott. Julie, an emergency contraceptive, is working to make the morning-after pill accessible for all without stigma.

Julie can be purchased in all 50 U.S. states across 4,500 Walmart locations. No prescription for this over-the-counter medication is needed, and it retails at $43. Regarding formulation, the brand is no different from Plan B One-Step and other generic brands, containing 1.5 mg of Levonorgestrel – a progestin-only emergency contraceptive. There is no age restriction for this product; it can be purchased without an ID. The pill should be taken within 72 hours of unprotected sex to lower your chances of pregnancy by 89%. The earlier it is taken, the better the effectiveness. The OTC medication delays or stops ovulation to avoid fertilization and is not an abortion medication. Julie does not negatively impact one’s chances of getting pregnant in the future and is only used to temporarily stop ovulation from decreasing the chances of pregnancy when taken.

“The opportunity to reset the narrative around this product is tremendous.” – Julie Schott, Julie Founder

The brand is hoping to ensure equal access to contraception regardless of what state you reside in. Julie Schott has discussed how many of her business ventures are inspired by her wanting to create a better coming-of-age story for young people, and this contraceptive is no different. Needing to take a morning-after pill is nothing to be ashamed of, and Julie is hoping to lower the stressors that come after unprotected sex. The brand also aims to educate people by creating a medical board to help get reliable and credible information to the public. The brand has also established a 1:1 program; for every purchase, one will be donated to communities in need on a quarterly basis.

Julie gave the morning after-pill a Gen-Z-approved rebrand, helping make the medication stigma and anxiety free. The colorful box creates an approachable element to the product. Investor in Julie Comedian Esther Povitsky said, “I could visualize myself laughing with my friends like, ‘Oh, I had sex with a loser. I’m gonna grab Julie on the way home.'” Julie is meant to give emergency contraceptives a new reputation. It’s a product you can keep on hand in case of an emergency and feel no shame when purchasing it. Julie is helping people of all ages, but especially young people take control of their reproductive health with their messages of empowerment and mission of accessibility.

The Sustainable Sex Toy Line Making Waves, Ohhcean

    the unwash review

Get ready for the sustainable swap you didn’t see coming…in more ways than one. Ohhcean is the latest sex toy line by Sinful, made entirely from recycled ocean plastic. Sinful is the largest intimate product company in Scandinavia and is now the first in the world to launch a product line created from upcycled ocean plastic. Ohhcean is giving new life to an industry that you don’t typically think about regarding plastic waste. A variety of products can be made from recycled ocean plastic. This new innovation by Ohhcean is no different and offers a unique perspective on how far various industries can go to incorporate recycled plastics into their products.

Mathilde Mackowski, Sinful’s co-founder, wanted to create a product that was part of a solution for plastic waste. Nearly all adult toys are made from plastic, and Mackowski saw an opportunity to redefine how upcycled plastic is utilized. Inspired by her visits to the beach, she realized you couldn’t look out into the ocean without seeing loads of plastic waste, hence the name Ohhcean.

“The ohhcean products so far are a reinterpretation of the bestsellers from the past 15 years. They are the intersection between our quest for a more playful sex life for everyone and a more eco-considerate approach to getting there.”

Sinful and Ohhcean are innovating how we think about reducing, reusing, and recycling across all industries. The brand has partnered with #tide, a leader in upcycling ocean plastic, to produce the line of sex toys using their facilities powered by renewable energy. Mackowski hopes this is just the beginning for Sinful and that more eco-friendly products will hopefully come in the future.

The collection has launched in Europe with planning releases for the United States, Canada, Singapore, Australia, and New Zealand. The world’s first line of sex toys made from recycled ocean plastic includes three different vibrators in varying shades of blue – these are all encased in silicone and should only be used with water-based lubricants. Occhean marks a moment of being environmentally mindful in all areas, including sexual wellness, which may have been an afterthought prior. This launch aims to reduce the environmental impact of intimate products. These are products made to not only create fun and intimacy but inspire the possibilities of change.

    01

    Neen

Neen has a focus on buying less and having your products do more. The brand created a one-of-a-kind, medical-grade silicone mold to hold the refillable products that can be washed and reused (they’re even dishwasher safe). Launching with a range of colorful and eye-catching lip, eye, and cheek products – these are made to help you achieve a full look with only a few products.

    02

    Everist

Everist concentrates are a waterless product you lather in the shower and then use just like regular shampoo, conditioner, or body wash. They come in a sleek aluminum tube along with an aluminum turn key to ensure the most amount of product is used. Aluminum is the most accessible material to recycle, helping you feel confident when putting this product in your recycle bin after use. This product is heavily concentrated, so a little goes a long way – each bottle should last around three months with regular use.

The Beauty Industry Comes Together with the Every Body Campaign

    the unwash • social impact

In the wake of a ‘post-Roe’ America, the beauty industry has united to defend reproductive justice. Over 35 brands have pledged their support to ensure equal access to reproductive care with the Every Body Campaign, giving 100% of proceeds from limited edition items to SisterSong, a women of color reproductive justice collective. The Every Body Campaign is the largest beauty industry-back initiative and highlights a moment where brands of all sizes are coming together to use their platform for change. This initiative creates clear messaging on where these brands stand regarding the right to choose, which provides clarity for consumers to support brands that hold the same values. The Every Body Campaign is powered by Saie Beauty. It comes right before the November 8th midterm elections, reminding people to use their purchasing power for good but also head to the polls.

“The response has been incredible, we’ve raised over $100,000 in just four days from these limited edition and our communities have been so positive and thankful.” – Laney Crowell, Saie Founder

Saie Beauty hosted an array of conversations on their Instagram Live to discuss reproductive health education and what a post-Roe v. Wade America looks like. These conversations were held with SisterSong, CEO of Megababe – Kate Sturino, CEO of Maude – Eva Goicochea, and Saie Founder Laney Crowell. Laney Crowell was featured on CNN and discussed how the brand’s part of this collaboration raised over $100,000 in only four days. The Every Body Campaign is centering marginalized communities to ensure access to reproductive care that is often overlooked in the fight for justice.

Fan favorite brands include by/rosie jane, Fable & Mane, Freck Beauty, Kate McLeod, Kinfeld, Kopari, maude, Megababe, Mented Cosmetics, Nécessaire, Nette, The Outset, PHLUR, Topicals, and Youth to the People are all part of this campaign. The 2022 midterm election has numerous issues up for grabs. Halfway through a Presidential term, the midterms are held for Senate and House seats. This election will determine if Democrats can maintain majority control of Congress and be a significant factor in whether the Presidential agenda will be able to progress forward. Recently the Supreme Court has released multiple landmark cases causing many Americans to want to head to the ballot box on November 8th. Voters are working to help hold onto hope for codifying Roe v. Wade, continuing to support LGBTQ+ rights, inflation reduction, and other human rights issues impacting the citizens of the United States. Some of the biggest concerns on the ballot include abortion rights, LGBTQ+ issues, immigration reform, and inflation. Numerous states are attempting to pass measures to eliminate abortion. A handful of close gubernatorial races, such as Stacey Abrams in Georgia and Beto O’Rourke in Texas, attempt to gain democratic leadership in both states. Many celebrities and G-Zers are encouraging people to vote to preserve democracy in the country and stop dangerous right-wing narratives.

The last day to vote is November 8th. Until then, you can vote early or drop your ballot off in a drop box.

Your voting options are to either vote in person on November 8th, drop your ballot at a designated drop box, vote by mail or absentee ballot, or vote early.

Bring your license and any other identification.

Know your voting rights, especially if you are in a state facing high rates of voter suppression. The ACLU and Brennan Center for Justice are great resources. If you see voter intimidation, excessively long lines at polling sites, or have any voter-related questions, call 1-866-Our–Vote.

Be active in your community and help others on election day. Whether being aware of what is happening at your polling site and helping anyone needing assistance or even lending someone a ride, play your part in ensuring everyone has access to vote.

“Across the country, extremist candidates are shamelessly using their final days on the campaign trail to advance grotesque and outrageous lies attacking and maligning LGBTQ+ people, designed to scare voters into supporting their campaigns,” – Joni Madison, the Human Rights Campaign’s Interim President

    What Are the Issues?

Abortion is on the ballot this election due to the overturn of Roe v. Wade by the Supreme Court. California, Michigan, and Vermont are attempting to gain further protections for abortion access in their states. In contrast, Kentucky is hoping to pass a measure to deny the right to an abortion. Montana has the Born-Alive Infant Protection Act on the ballot, which would fine or allot prison time to providers that do not provide what the state deems to be ‘life-saving care’ to infants, including penalties for abortion. Over the summer, Kansas tried to pass a similar measure to Kentucky. It failed, proving that many people need safe access to reproductive health care regardless of party.

Rising gas prices and worsening inflation across all industries concern voters considerably. Democrats were able to pass the Inflation Reduction Act, and with continued majority control in Congress, the party will attempt to continue to try to lower prices and negotiate trade deals. Supreme Court rulings such as the overturn of Roe v. Wade have proven to be an economic issue. Many Americans could not afford to have more than two children as there would be approximately $30,000 of additional yearly expenses. This election is very different from others as states are trying to pass harsher laws that most voters are not in favor of, which could deter voters from voting along party lines, especially concerning economic issues.

Right-wing candidates have built many campaign promises around fear-mongering of leftist ideologies. Matters on the school level around teaching evolution, climate change, the history of the United States, and critical race theory, a college-level course, have become a talking point for Republican candidates. In Florida, Ron DeSantis wants to ban teaching critical race theory, one again – a college level course, and many states have followed suit in these claims or have banned books with messaging that they believe it aligns with CRT. These dangerous narratives being pushed instill fear in many Americans with hopes of them showing up on election day.

LGBTQ+ issues, especially regarding transgender youth, have significantly shaped the midterm election. Anti-LGBTQ+ groups have spent tens of millions of dollars airing ads targeting the transgender community, mainly young people, attempting to spread dangerous misinformation. This has been a critical factor in the Florida governor race, where Democratic candidate Charlie Christ has slammed Ron DeSantis for having zero decency or kindness towards people that don’t look like or act like him. Targeting women, transgender youth, and the greater LGBTQ+ community is a fear-mongering tactic to put those communities in danger. People must head to the ballot box and protect their community members from extremist candidates and their proposed legislation.

    Understanding the Midterms

The midterms determine how the next two years of a President’s term will go based on which party holds majority control of Congress. Ensuring a democratic majority will help push forward legislation protecting reproductive rights, LGBTQ+ rights, climate issues, and inflation reduction.

It is essential in every election, not just the Presidential election, to participate in your civic duty to use your voice and vote for candidates that align with your values. Voting is just one part of our more prominent role in creating progressive change that benefits everyone. Every day we should be voting with our dollar and taking a stand for meaningful issues, but on November 8th, we need to take our voice to the ballot and demand that progress is furthered. Every vote matters, and the next generation will thank you.

Luxury Fragrance that Gives a Damn

    the unwash review

A brand new company, Eauso Vert, launched just this month and is already making waves with its sustainable and genderless fragrance line. Sourced with sustainable materials and committed to ingredient transparency, Eauso Vert is hoping to create a new standard in the luxury fragrance industry. Launched with six scents that range from fresh to woody and warm, there is a scent perfect for anyone. The founders reminisce on their memories with fragrance, whether childhood stories or travel, and wanted to create a fragrance line that helps the consumer tell a story.

Founders Faye Harris and Tanya Gonzalez founded the brand with the concept of ‘conscious luxury,’ which entails bringing a luxury fragrance focused on transparent sustainability to a market that previously lacked this. Together the founders have over ten years of marketing experience in the beauty industry and are connected over their shared mantras of doing more with less.

“In our efforts to develop this brand, we’re doing what we can with what we have and making small steps toward progress every step of the way.” – Faye Harris, Eauso Vert Co-Founder

Although the brand is new, they intend to track its sustainability metrics and share impact reports. This commitment to transparency highlights that consumers are putting much more value in being able to identify ingredients, understand the lifecycle of packaging, and overall understand the greater ethos of what they are purchasing. The brand only uses EU-compliant vegan and cruelty-free ingredients, most of which are biodegradable and upcycled. There is a significant focus on waste reduction with the use of glass bottles, biodegradable caps, and labels, as well as the use of vegetable ink for printing.

The brand is fueled by its understanding of the beauty industry’s negative impact on the environment and using its knowledge to create sizable change. The beauty industry is overflowing with products that cannot be broken down easily over time or even repurposed, but brands like Eauso Vert are changing this, and ultimately it’s brands like this that we as need to pave the way.
